The leafy neighbourhood of Surbiton is found in south west London and next to the River Thames.
It’s a great area for commuters as the transport links into the city are so good from here. Being just 11 miles from the city centre, it takes less than half an hour to get to London Waterloo by train. The train to Clapham Junction takes you to Victoria, where you can pick up both Underground and mainline services to take you throughout the city and beyond. Surbiton has fantastic bus services making it really easy to travel across London by bus from here. For those travelling by car, the A3 (which connects through to Portsmouth) is just a 10 minute drive away, and the M25 can be reached in half an hour.
Surbiton has education providers for all ages, and families love it here because the local schools are so good. Primary schools include Christ Church C of E Primary School and Grand Avenue Primary and Nursery School, which have both been rated good by Ofsted. Secondary schools include The Hollyfield School, which is a comprehensive school, and Surbiton High, which is a private school. Kingston College is nearby too, offering both academic and vocational courses.
Surbiton has a lot to offer the local community and the busy areas of Victoria Road, St Mark’s Hill and Brighton Road are full of independent stores and coffee shops. Shops include Regency Bookshop, which dates back to 1962, and Farrago, which is a lovely gift shop. These unique stores are nestled amongst well-known high street names such as M&S Simply Food, Clarks and Boots.
There are lots of gorgeous local cafes to enjoy here; Three Peas in a Pod serves up tasty, freshly made food (including Sunday roasts) and Pickled Pantry has delicious coffee and cakes on offer. When heading out for a meal, there’s plenty to choose from and something for all tastes. Go to Positano for an authentic Italian meal, or try The French Table, which is a family-run restaurant with wine pairings and a tasting menu. You can also find well-known national chains in the area, such as Pizza Express.
Surbiton has plenty of bustling pubs and bars making it a great place for a night out. Head to Niku to try a range of cocktails, or if you’re after a traditional pub, The Victoria is a popular choice with an open fire and a welcoming atmosphere.
Healthcare is provided for by local pharmacies and GP practices, as well as Surbiton Health Centre. There are plenty of dental practices throughout the area too.
Surbiton Farmers Market runs every month, bringing 26 food stalls from farmers and artisans. The market started in 2009 and it’s getting increasingly popular because the produce is exceptional and it’s a great community asset that raises funds for local charities and good causes.
The Surbiton area is beautiful and locals enjoy making the most of the greenspaces here, such as Victoria Park and Claremont Gardens. The Thames runs alongside the neighbourhood and provides lovely riverside walks to enjoy throughout the year.
Surbiton is known as the location where the BBC’s The Good Life was filmed. It’s retained its beautiful, leafy setting, but it also has a fantastic, bustling community, and plenty to offer local families and commuters.
