Welling is an area in south east London that’s located within the London Borough of Bexley. It’s just over a mile away from Bexleyheath, and just over 10 miles from Charing Cross.
Welling station connects the area to London Victoria, London Charing Cross and London Cannon Street stations. It takes about half an hour to reach central London from here by train, so it’s a great location for commuters. There’s also a great amount of bus services running throughout the area connecting residents to the rest of the city.
There’s a good range of schools in Welling making it a great place for families. St Stephen’s Catholic Primary School was rated outstanding by Ofsted, and there’s other schools available such as Danson Primary School. Secondary school education is provided locally by Welling School and Bexley Grammar School. There are also plenty of preschool and nursery settings within the local area providing plenty of choice for families with younger children.
Welling High Street is lined with a range of chain and independent stores, providing a useful shopping hub for local people. There’s Welling Collectables (an antique shop), Liquorice Childrenswear and Cruisin Records Welling, which are all fantastic independent shops bringing something unique to the area. There’s also a local Lidl, Morrisons, and a huge Tesco with a sit-in costa which is great for all your grocery shopping needs.
Welling has a good amount of bars and restaurants to enjoy; Chupitos Tapas Bar and Restaurant serves up tasty Spanish food and has a great range of drinks (including cocktails) available, and Da Peppino is a popular local Italian restaurant. Brasa Bar and Grill, Shampan Welling (Indian) and Avenida (Mediterranean) are all excellent restaurants that are highly rated by local people too.
Welling has a good range of pubs on and around its high street, such as The Rose & Crown and Nags Head. The Hangar is another favourite due to its great ambience and beers, and The Door Hinge Real Ale House is popular as it’s a cosy spot with lovely staff.
The nearest hospitals to Welling are the Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup and the Queen Elizabeth’s in Woolwich.
Welling enjoys a good amount of parks and green space within the local area. There’s a lot to explore at Danson Park with its children’s splash park, woodland walks, water sports, boating lake, café, and pub. Nearby, East Wickham Open Space is loved for its natural beauty, and it has a wheelchair and pushchair friendly tarmac path running around it, as well as a playground, sports court and a skateboard area.
The Woodlands Farm Trust is a local urban farm and it has 89 acres of land. Younger visitors can find out about all the animals on the farm, as it runs a Young Farmers Club and Toddler Club. There’s also a Stick Man Activity Trail available for young children to take part in.
