Wetherby is a picturesque market town that sits on the banks of the River Wharfe in West Yorkshire. It’s the perfect location if you work in Leeds or York, but prefer the surroundings of a relaxing town.
Wetherby is just off the A1, which helps to make up for its lack of train station. Leeds is 13 miles away, Harrogate is just 10 miles, and York is about 14 miles away, all of which have national train stations. There are excellent bus services in and around Wetherby, taking people to the local suburbs or the nearby towns and cities.
Wetherby is a popular for families due to its good schools, which Ofsted rated good or outstanding. There are four primary schools, including Crossley Street Primary School and St Joseph’s Primary School, and one secondary school, Wetherby High School. Nearby, Boston Spa has another secondary school, which serves the Wetherby area too.
Wetherby has some excellent options when you’re in the mood for retail therapy. There are lovely boutiques offering everything from the latest women’s fashion, like Olivia Grace, to gift shops packed full of exciting finds, like Twenty Seven Gifts. The Horsefair Centre houses national shopping brands, like Boots and Superdrug, and Wetherby also has a Marks & Spencer and supermarkets, like Morrisons.
Locals enjoy making the most of the delightful shops and café’s that are scattered alongside the Wharfe. It’s lovely to walk down to the Grade II listed Wetherby Bridge (which has stood for some 700 years) before stopping for refreshments at one of the numerous cafes, like The Cottage Coffee Shop and Gift Shop.
There’s plenty on offer here; everything from affordable meals to the very best in gastronomy. The original Wetherby Whaler is a popular place with locals as it serves the best fish and chips you’ll find. Bengal Lounge Wetherby has tasty curries, or try Sant’ Angelo for contemporary Italian food. There are plenty of takeaways, bars and traditional pubs to make the most of too.
Wetherby has good healthcare provision with plenty of GP services and pharmacies, and the nearest hospital is Harrogate District Hospital.
Wetherby Arts Festival runs in October, and it’s getting increasingly popular. It’s a month of fun and festivities with an eclectic mix of entertainment, ranging from all types of music to poetry and literature.
When living in Wetherby, you’re never far from a walk through the rolling hills. There are plenty of tranquil walks in the countryside, where you can enjoy a picnic with family as well as trails that take you to the gorgeous surrounding towns and villages.
Stockeld Park is nearby and provides a great day out for the family, with adventure playgrounds, an enchanted forest and much more to explore and enjoy.
