History
Halifax is a historic market town that lies in the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The town has a rich history stretching back to the 12th century when it became a centre of woollen cloth production. It was a major industrial centre during the Industrial Revolution and is still home to numerous textile mills and other industries today.
Halifax also has a remarkable array of historic sites, including Halifax Minster (formerly All Souls Church) which dates from the early 16th century and the 12th century St Mary’s Church.
Transport
Halifax has a strong transport infrastructure, the town is served by a network of buses and there are good rail links to major cities such as Leeds, Manchester and London. The M62 motorway is just 10 minutes drive from Halifax providing easy access to other towns in West Yorkshire. There is also an airport at Leeds Bradford International about 30 minutes away from Halifax.

Halifax town centre has plenty of shops, restaurants and pubs. There are also several supermarkets including Morrison’s, Tesco and Sainsbury’s. For entertainment, there is a multiplex cinema and theatre at The Piece Hall, as well as many parks including Manor Heath Park and Savile Park.
Local attractions
The Piece Hall is a Grade I listed building which was once used to display cloth and now houses an indoor market, shops, cafes and restaurants as well as hosting events throughout the year. You may have heard of Shibden Hall, a 14th-century manor house and public park with gardens open all year round. Other attractions include Bankfield Museum, Shibden Valley Nature Reserve and Halifax Gibbet, the oldest surviving gallows in Britain.
Schools
Halifax is home to a number of excellent schools including Ovenden Academy for 11-18 year olds, North Bridge Junior School for 3-11 year olds and St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School for children from 4 to 11 years old.
